German E-50 Tank with L/68 10.5cm Gun
The E-50 Tank with L/68 10.5cm Gun was a battlefield adaptation created from salvaged E-75 and E-50 components. As the war progressed and resources became scarce, field workshops and factories began reconstructing damaged vehicles using available spare parts, leading to the development of this hybrid variant.
Approximately 200 units were modified, utilizing E-50 hulls with E-75 turrets or vice versa, ensuring that valuable armored assets remained in service. Some of these tanks were also equipped with night vision devices, enhancing their effectiveness in low-light engagements during the final stages of the war.
Design and Modifications
This variant was created out of necessity, combining elements from both E-50 and E-75 platforms:
- Hull: E-50 chassis, providing better mobility than the E-75 while maintaining strong protection.
- Turret: E-75 turret, offering a stronger mantlet and improved crew protection.
- Main Armament: 10.5cm L/68 high-velocity cannon, giving it superior penetration against enemy armor at long range.
- Additional Features:
- Some units were equipped with infrared night vision systems, improving combat effectiveness in nighttime operations.
- Modifications were made to optimize the fire-control system for the hybrid setup.
Combat Performance
Despite being a field-modified design, the E-50 with L/68 10.5cm gun proved to be a capable battlefield asset, benefiting from:
- The E-50’s mobility, allowing it to relocate quickly and engage enemy forces effectively.
- The E-75’s reinforced turret, providing enhanced protection for the crew.
- The long-barreled 10.5cm gun, ensuring excellent firepower against enemy heavy armor.
Operational Use
- Deployed in defensive battles, where its upgraded firepower and strong armor allowed it to hold key positions.
- Used in counteroffensive strikes, where its mobility and long-range gun made it effective in tank duels.
- Limited numbers received night vision modifications, giving them an advantage in nighttime engagements.

Legacy
The E-50 with L/68 10.5cm gun was one of the last adaptations of the E-series, created out of battlefield necessity. While it was not part of the original E-series production plan, it became an effective late-war combat vehicle, continuing to serve until the end of the war.
